There is an incubation period, and someone is not expected to show any signs during the incubation period. So not showing any signs in the day after the encounter shouldn't be assumed to mean that the person was not infected.

Don't know if I had three bats or a repeat visitor. I shooed the first two and finally slew the third one under my bed.

Yep. If the bat is in a room where someone is sleeping they should be vaccinated.
