3. Maybe. But why should anesthesiologists get paid differently from surgeons? Surgeons get paid a flat fee.

In extraordinary cases, they can appeal for higher payment. But I’ve never seen a surgeon return money when the procedure takes half the expected time.

If Anthem’s new payment rate is calculated using Medicare’s relative values, recognizing it’s an average — some more, some less — then I’m not sure it’s a problem. I’d bet money the vast majority of anesthesiologists will still perform anesthesia services under the new reimbursement policy. Further, I bet very few will see any significant cut in salary.

If we are going to assassinate people, we ought to have good reason and understand why.
