There are predators and varmints that will occasionally require the use of a firearm in order to protect stock, veggie gardens, and pets.
A ground hog can destroy a 5 year old mature Asparagus bed in less than an hour.

A raccoon in the hen house after dark will kill ALL the roosting hens (and eat NONE of them) in short order.

Our Constable/Ranger has advised us that ANY Skunk, Possum, Raccoon, Fox, Coyote seen in open areas during broad daylight
is probably rabid.
