(3,660 posts)Over at least two and probably three generations hoi polloi have not just devalued but denied the practice of teaching children and students that correct use of language and logic is an important skill. We are told we can't invalidate Special Snowflake's "cultural identity" by insisting they use standard English. We have been called "snob" or "Grammar Nazi" or, occasionally by the few remaining who can manage the multiple syllables, "pretentious" for using it ourselves. Pop culture sputters out venom about "ivory towers" and "disconnected academics" who can neither offer anything of value nor even relate to "real people" as if the intellectually limited were a separate, and superior, species. We snidely post "TL-DR" on anything with depth and nuance beyond the level of an ad jingle, and think that brevity is always wit and never the absence of wits.
Fifty years of that and you get people who think Caribou Barbie is the realest and superiorest of all, because we collectively have told them so their entire lives. Another thread today mentioned Buckley and Vidal. They would be laughed out of the studio today for expecting "real people" to understand their hi-falutin book larnin'. We didn't fall so far. We jumped, and dragged our children off with us.
