fucking with us. I'm guessing mostly ignorance.

Not that they wouldn't be dicks given the opportunity, but generally they tend to view things in simplistic terms. So progressing beyond a superficial understanding of the meaning of the lyrics (and their own ideologies) would tend to be a huge challenge for them.
