It's a rejection of changes they have seen in the last decade or so that they don't like. Dems and most Repubs promised to continue the status quo.

Trump promised to smash the status quo, smash the establishment, reject the media, make America great again, or at least do something completely different from all the other politicians they've been hearing from.

If you don't like the way things are, vote for change. A lot of them won't like what happens to them. but they feel powerful knowing that they caused it to happen in defiance of all expectations.

It's also a major rejection of us as liberals: diversity, feminism, gay rights, transgender, environment, globalization, education, etc.
