Olivia Nuzzi on Leave from New York Magazine After Romantic Relationship with RFK Jr. [View all]

Reporter Olivia Nuzzi of New York magazine was placed on leave by the publication after it became aware of a romantic relationship she had with former independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr., according to Oliver Darcy of Status. In a report posted on Thursday night, Darcy included a statement from New York regarding the personnel decision:

“Recently our Washington Correspondent Olivia Nuzzi acknowledged to the magazine’s editors that she had engaged in a personal relationship with a former subject relevant to the 2024 campaign while she was reporting on the campaign, a violation of the magazine’s standards around conflicts of interest and disclosures,” a spokesperson for New York magazine said in a statement. “Had the magazine been aware of this relationship, she would not have continued to cover the presidential campaign,” the spokesperson added. “An internal review of her published work has found no inaccuracies nor evidence of bias. She is currently on leave from the magazine, and the magazine is conducting a more thorough third-party review. We regret this violation of our readers’ trust.”

Darcy added that the relationship between the 31-year-old reporter and the 70-year-old political scion began after a November 2023 profile she wrote on Kennedy, a source close to Nuzzi said. That source told Darcy that Nuzzi did not use Kennedy as a source while covering the 2024 campaign. Nuzzi did not comment for the story, but shortly after the story broke, she issued a statement denying the relationship was “physical.” “Earlier this year, the nature of some communication between myself and a former reporting subject turned personal,” she said in statement obtained by Corbin Boiles of The Daily Beast. “During that time, I did not directly report on the subject nor use them as a source. The relationship was never physical but should have been disclosed to prevent the appearance of a conflict. I deeply regret not doing so immediately and apologize to those I’ve disappointed, especially my colleagues at New York.”

Kennedy originally sought the Democratic nomination, but abandoned the effort to launch an independent run. However, he ultimately ended that bid and endorsed former President Donald Trump. A second source told Status “the relationship is thought to have started around the new year.” In March, Nuzzi spoke with Frank Bruni of the New York Times and said both the major party nominees for president should be “terrified.” “If I were Trump, I might consider getting myself indicted again — the indictments seem only to improve his standing,” she said at the time. “It is early, and we have compelling reasons to peer at the polling with some healthy skepticism. However, both likely major party nominees are so unpopular that they would each be the most historically unpopular nominee were it not for the other one. It’s a remarkably precarious situation.” She called it “a three-man race.” Kennedy is married to actress Cheryl Hines. Nuzzi is engaged to reporter Ryan Lizza. Darcy reported that Kennedy allegedly bragged in private about his relationship with Nuzzi.
