In reply to the discussion: Trump Says That if He Loses, 'the Jewish People Would Have a Lot to Do' With It [View all]mathematic
(1,532 posts)Republican voting Jews aren't stupid. They know there are Christians that only support Israel because of the religious view you're referring to.
They know that Christians, especially Catholics, have had a long and durable history of antisemitism that continues to this day. They also know that Muslims have a long and durable history of antisemitism that continues to this day and are, at best, trying to re-implement the historic system of religiously mandated oppression against Jews in the Jewish homeland or, at worst, trying to do the thing they say they're trying to do and killing all Jews.
This isn't some kind of concealed logic. If you talk to any American Jew that feels strongly about Israel you will learn this. If they believe the Republican characterizations of Democrats regarding Israel then they will tend to vote for Republicans. Historically, most don't, which is why Jews have been one of the most reliable D voting demographics.
I think the important takeaway from this is that when Trump and other Republicans say things like this they're trying to convince people that the Republican characterization of Democrats regarding Israel is true. The correct rhetorical response is not "hey republicans hate you too". It's "no, these characterizations are false and Democrats strongly support the existence of Israel".
