If he'd researched her just a little bit, he would have known better than to pull a stunt like that. But he did not bother. Instead, he assumed she'd be a pushover. After all, she's "just" a woman.
He strikes me as the type of man who is very confident of his ability to intimidate women and push them around, and when he found out that wasn't going to work with her, he froze. Like most bullies, he's used to relying on his bullying "skills," and he doesn't have anything else to fall back on. Too bad, so sad.
