The Republican in line to chair the Senate Judiciary Committee wrote Sunday that Kash Patel “must prove to Congress he will reform & restore public trust in FBI.”
Writing on X, Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) said current FBI Director Chris Wray “has failed at fundamental duties,” and that Patel, who was selected by President-elect Donald Trump to replace Wray, has to step up now. “It’s time 2 chart a new course 4 TRANSPARENCY +ACCOUNTABILITY at FBI,” Grassley wrote of the law-enforcement agency.
Trump said Saturday that he intended for Patel to replace Wray, who was appointed by Trump in 2017 after Trump fired James Comey. The position is subject to Senate confirmation. Wray’s term doesn’t expire until 2027 so if he doesn’t resign on his own, Trump would need to fire him for the job to become vacant.
Grassley, first elected in 1980, is the senior member of the U.S. Senate and the sixth-longest-serving senator in American history.
