Forty-three construction workers are missing after the earthquake caused an unfinished 30-storey building in Bangkok to collapse, Thai authorities say.

Fifty people were inside the building near Chatuchak Park, which is hundreds of miles away from the earthquake's epicentre in Myanmar.

Seven escaped while 43 others remain trapped, the National Institute for Emergency Medicine said in a Facebook post.

AFP news agency also reported that 43 people are missing, quoting police.

Pictures starting to come from Mandalay:

Lines of wounded at Myanmar hospital after powerful quake

A stream of casualties were brought to the hospital -- some in cars, others in pickups, and others carried on stretchers, their bodies bloody and covered in dust.

"This is a mass casualty area", a hospital official said, as they ushered journalists away from the treatment area.

The hospital itself was hit by the terrifying tremors, which buckled roads and ripped tarmac apart as the ground vibrated violently for around half a minute.

The hospital's emergency department was itself heavily damaged, a car crushed under the heavy concrete of its fallen entrance.

A 1,000-bed hospital in Myanmar capital Naypyidaw is a likely "mass casualty area", news agency AFP said Friday afternoon after a 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck near the city of Sagaing, which is 260km away. There is no confirmation on the number of dead at the hospital, but 20 have been reported from across the country, including 10 at a mosque that collapsed in Mandalay while people were praying.

The hospital - which has not yet been named - is one of the biggest in the city, AFP said.
