(6,374 posts)I have yet to find one that I cannot figure out and operate in real time. Tractor Trailers, farm equipment, airplanes, air boats, motorcycles, Segways... the only thing I have never attempted to operate is a helicopter. (I have ridden in plenty, just never flew one.)
I also seem to have the ability to make everyone around me dislike me. I don't know how this one came about, and it did not used to be this way at all, but recently it has been undeniable.
The most fun thing I ever 'operated'?
So, a quick story. One of my uncles was on the team that designed and created the computers for the Space Shuttle program, and they also built and programmed the simulator. On one visit, we got permission to go to the lab where the simulator was set up. It did not have all the fru-fru that is in that picture. It was a frame of rods with the monitors simulating the windows and the control panels. There was no body or even seatbelts on the seats at the time. I got to pilot two missions with my uncle. The first one to release a satellite and the second to retrieve it. Both times, we were almost perfect. We had liftoff. Roll was perfect and so was SRB separation. We did MICO and jettisoned the tank. We did the task. We came back into earth's orbit with the correct angle. We shot through the atmosphere to land at Edwards.
And, both times we came down too hard, blew the tires, rolled the craft and killed everyone aboard. If you have seen the movie "Space Camp', when the kids are in the simulator and the screens all turn red and the front ones say, 'No Survivors', that is exactly what I saw both times.
I tell ya. That thing is like trying to land a brick. (Not my quote, just my paraphrase.)
