Through the early 60's, Davis had been a regular featured performer at the big Las Vegas venues, but was denied accomodations there because of his race. Fellow Rat-Packer Frank Sinatra for one was furious over this, and brought in and paid for onsite mobile setups for Davis. It wasn't until Civil Rights legislation was passed that black entertainers were afforded the same basic rights that their fans enjoyed. I suppose those who fought for and secured civil and voting rights for those previously denied would be regarded as being "woke".
