I did change my settings to "classic" to see what this was all about, and with my laptop, the bigger photos were not fully visible on my screen. I had to scroll to see the full photo, and that is beyond annoying to me. I have no doubt that I would not vote for a photo that is too large, partly because not seeing the photo on the screen takes something away from the impact, and partly because it would just bother me.
I am assuming that if I leave my settings at "standard", I will not have this same problem. And if that is the case, it will not matter at all to me.

A lot of the distress about longest side is due to the Standard/Classic account setting

If your image is in portrait mode, it will mean scrolling, even at the old standards.
