The DU software is going to keep resizing the images down to 800 pixels.
However, the resizing is only in the view. If you do a right-click "show image" in your browser, the full-size image will be displayed at its full size and quickly since the full-size image was already downloaded prior to the view showing it smaller.
My recommendation is to resize your images to 1000 or so pixels so that those wanting a full-screen view can have it while others are not penalized by downloading megabytes of data they will never see.

A lot of the distress about longest side is due to the Standard/Classic account setting

If your image is in portrait mode, it will mean scrolling, even at the old standards.
