If any state wants to get Federal highway funds, they need to kick in a threshold amount or they get passed by. Missouri was close to failing to meet that level before they raised the tax. Something else to keep in mind is that the Show Me state has the seventh largest highway system in the US. I quit using I-70 across the state when Mrs PG and I travel to visit family in MA. Using US 36 across northern Missouri is a smoother ride and less traffic to boot. I-70 is still an unpleasant road because it needs regular maintenance due the truck traffic that goes on night and day. I'm sure that Ms Walsh would get an earful from the many farmers and school boards in her state who are concerned about the poor condition the bridges are in.

If Missouri has an $8 Billion surplus for road maintenance, it's because their duly elected representatives spend too much time in Jefferson City and not enough time traveling to meet their constituents where they live.
