3. Manassas was the first major engagement between the principal Union and Confederate armies.

Both sides thought it would end the war. The Union forces were routed, but the Confederates didn't have the strength to follow up with an advance on Washington. "Both armies were sobered by the fierce fighting and the many casualties and realized that the war was going to be much longer and bloodier than either had anticipated."
