A laptop gives you mobility when you want it.
You can take it out the porch or to a friend's house or the library.

If you want to use it in the home off, you can connect it the larger monitor.

From what you described, the screen size will be the largest cost determinant for you.

RAM, processor, HDD size won't matter for you.

I found decent computer at Walmart for under $300, Target will have something similar. The warehouse clubs will be a little cheaper. It won't track satellites or crack the human gnome -- but it will easily do everything you want.
