Something like that if not exactly that. It's at your end. You should take a look at the cable modem status page ( probably http://192.168.100.1/ ), which is where you would check to see if it is providing DHCP services. (DHCP == Dynamic Host Control Protocol).

There will be a configuration page, but the only thing I can do there is restart the modem. I would expect DHCP to be on at the modem, since I have no way to turn it off.

I run Ubuntu. My menu bar has a little icon on it - that looks like two electric plugs stuck together - that runs a script called "auto etho" which configures my wired net automatically if DHCP is set up.
