Just to rule out the easy stuff - When you connect two, do you get a link light of some sort on the router and/or the pc? The pc light (if it has one) will be on the back by the ethernet socket)

(Cause if it's just a duff cable, this will be easy. )

Edit: Second thing is go to System > Administration > Network tools, select "Eth0" as the network device (if you can) and note the hardware address on the left - this should let us know your card is responding and who made it.

The HW address will be some gibberish like 08:00:27:b5:ed:cb
