McConnell announces 10 p.m. vote in last-ditch effort to avert government shutdown ahead of midnight deadline

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said a vote to end debate on a short-term spending bill will take place at 10 p.m. Friday in a last-ditch effort to avert a government shutdown ahead of a midnight deadline.

McConnell announced the vote on the Senate floor Friday evening.

Hours earlier, a meeting between President Trump and the Senate’s top Democrat had produced no resolution, and Trump redoubled his support for the Republican plan.

Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) said he and Trump made “some progress” in a private meeting about keeping the government open but did not strike a final deal. Senate Democrats were scheduled to meet at 8:30 p.m., according to a Democratic aide.
