Senator Kerry was up for this post too, it is very important to not bring undue attention to oneself. And, it wasn't up to Kerry to continually defend her. To me, to expect him to have done this is going beyond reasonable. This all assumes she was the one going to be picked, and we can never be sure of who the President would have asked in the end.
I also want to ask you what would have happened if the President would have picked Kerry over Rice? I think some people would not be satisfied with anything but a Rice nomination.
