Sounds like a stupid move.

I could maybe see it if they wanted a woman to teach Women's studies, or an AA prof to teach African American Studies - ie, try to avoid the 'Dolezal' candidates, with people trying to 'teach' from life experiences they don't and really can't have. But physics is universal, like math.
