I took train rides in the middle 1980’s while Reagan was trying to zero out Amtrak’s budget. I rode the Sinset Limited, the Coast Daylight, the Desert Wind, and the pioneer. I then rode the Empire builder to a point in Montana (A cousin’s wedding and I had to return home). I never rode the North Coast Hiawatha and I regret not doing so.

I’d love to ride that route.

Still, I have questions. Where would the train start? Would it have to run through South Dakota and risk having its funding nixed by South Dakota’s red-state governor and legislature?

And how about west of the Montana state line? Idaho is another state controlled by the zanies.
