I think you ought to jot down details of what happened--your employee's complaint, the C-word, the phone use, as well as your appropriate, measured response--just in case this guy is someone who tries to make trouble for you.
Too few managers stand up for the employees they manage, and I'm really glad to read about what you did. Good for you--in your own small way, you made the world a better place!
