I heard back from the foster mom. Apparently the long term medical needs of this dog relate not to having been heartworm positive, but to arthritis. The dog is only 5 and on monthly shots already, which can have some fairly serious side effects.

I think that's a deal breaker for me. If something were to happen to me, I don't think my son -- who lives in a townhouse (stairs)-- would be an appropriate place for her.
