Yeah, it's a little demeaning.
But I've learned to ask.

I was at a Sheets truck stop gassing up and went in for a pee and a cup of coffee.
I did not remember to ask, but the cashier asked me if I was a veteran.
"Yes"
"No charge, thank you for your service".
"Sheets gives free coffee for veterans?"
"Yes, but we don't advertise it."
Turns out she saw the USAF wings on my ID bracelet.
Miz t. gave it to me on our first wedding anniversary in 1970.
It also has the date that I got my wings.
