Until I was maybe 18 and she decided then that she wanted to be called Grandmother. (She was not really the type, but we accommodated her.) She probably needed that respect because as the middle child in her family of five she was teased a lot. Her nickname from her big brother was "Botchy."
But I get why she thought GanGan was something she wanted all of us to outgrow.
After her example, my mom picked out Gram as her name (her grandmother had been Gran). I decided on Grana. (Short a).
I don't plan on outgrowing it.

My oldest granddaughter is in her 30s and she still calls me Boompa. I love it. haha. nt
