5. One thing I forgot to mention about the critiquing

When people give you their feedback in class, you do not respond to it. When my work was being discussed, I would reflexively try to explain something and the teacher would tell me to shut up. It seemed odd to me at first but I understand it. You should receive the feedback without comment. All the other students knew that.

I had "work-shopped" my novel years ago at a now defunct website called "Authonomy". Being online and not face-to-face, some of the critiquing was pretty brutal, or at least it often seemed that way. But I learned a lot from the most negative reviewers.
