how many such alterations and insertions are part of what people now read? Since none of the Gospels are contemporaneous with the main character, one wonders how much was made from whole cloth from the very beginning of the written Gospels. Paul's epistles, of course, may be more authentic. Maybe. It's all a hodgepodge of fragments, put together as best people were able to do, or stitched together with goals in mind.
Nobody knows. Truly, nobody knows. It's all hidden by the passage of time, secrets kept, and alternatives destroyed.
