Part of the problem is that no Jew, then or now, would have proclaimed himself a 'God-Man'. That is not what Messiah meant or means. Whatever the origins of Christianity, it grew out of Judaism, as practiced in the period between the Maccabees and the razing of the Temple. The idea someone just made the whole thing up, and with such success, does not ring true. Someone does win the lottery, of course, but the odds are always against it. An inspirational figure, whose devoted followers couldn't let go of the dream, is more plausible. It is the survival of the institution which is the best argument for the historicity of its putative founder.
