His remark was about "the proliferation of hominids—all those near-men and proto-men and half-apes found in the fossil record". And the dividing line between species, and how they're related to each other and us, is still disputed, and some of the descriptions are based on just a few fragments, which is why the relationships are open to reinterpretation when some more are discovered.
