Keep religion out of government and keep government out of religion. Remember, the founding fathers were rebelling against Great Britain, where the King was, (and still is), the head of the Anglican church, which is the state sanctioned religion. They didn't want the authorities telling them what to believe and whom to worship, any more than they wanted the Church dictating the laws they were to live under. I think they had it right, btw.
