WWMD (What Would Mom Do?) [View all]

I'm so thankful that I still hear her even though she's been gone for months.

My mom was a Democrat, and she was a Catholic. She had a strong moral compass.

I remember one day nearly 40 years ago (when I was still in high school), I had stopped by my house after classes to pick up some sheet music so that some friends and I could rehearse for our woodwind ensemble for an upcoming spring concert. I had my best friend with me.

My mom had lost her job that year. She was home. The television was on.

A news report was on. Ronald Reagan had been shot.

My dear friend (not a bad person at all) let one word slip from her lips: "Good."

My mom flew off the handle, saying that no matter how bad someone is or how much you dislike them, it's never an excuse to wish them ill will or harm.

(It was nearly 5 years before my friend ever came by my mom's house again. lol)

I'm thinking of this incident because of the passing of Rush Limbaugh.

I am glad that there are fewer lies and less vitriolic speech in the public sphere.

But I just can't dance on his grave. Mom would not approve of that.
