1. It's true but you need some perspective...

...the draft was effectively over by 1972-ain't no draft dodgers or multiple deferment shit-stirrers under 65 or so. That does give us a means of scoring some senior politicians but unless you are over 60 the general population was never even been asked to serve in any serious fashion. And the service isn't for everyone. What we have is a "professional army" and like Tom Hanks said in "A League of Their Own" there's no crying in baseball-no one was dragged away to sacrifice-they read the contract and signed. It doesn't denigrate their service or sacrifice but it makes it a completely different animal. We can argue until the cows come home about whether a national service requirement would be a good thing, but until there is one I attach no stigma to non-service though I despise civilians who wrap their tattered asses in the flag...
