It's merficul that you have to go to DU in your browser to see anything.

The other sites are deliberately addictive. It's called intermittent reinforcement.
Apps, as opposed to browser access, really beg you to turn on notifications.
Notifications just push stuff at you and interrupt your train of thought, or work flow.

Admittedly, seeing replies to your own post is not like getting bombarded by other people's posts.
I do it, too, but in-between chores and going out to take photos.
