I must also point out that there is an entire industry preying on the working poor.
Payday lenders (who have a friend in Debbie Wasserman Schultz, auto title lenders, NSF fees, late charges/penalties.

Add to that the fact that those of lesser means are often forced to make "stupid" decisions and lose out on economies of scale.
Making minimum payments on credit cards, calling in sick the day before payday when there's no way to get to work, skipping work networking events due to lack of funds, declining invitations to birthday/graduation parties to avoid purchasing a gift, buying a 3# bag of dog food instead of the so-much-cheaper per # larger bag, eating cheap & unhealthy fast food when grocery shopping is not in the budget.
