8. Trust me, our education professionals are teaching history. That doesn't automatically translate into students' learning

As a H.S. teacher of juniors and seniors for over 20 years (35 total), I'd review at the year's start what they were supposed to know. I couldn't believe what they told me their teachers hadn't taught. I told them that I'd seen their previous teachers' lesson plans and knew for a fact what they were taught. They just didn't learn or retain that teaching. I made them own that. Then we went into review for at least 20 days until all student programs had been changed and there were no more incoming/outgoing students.

When surveys were done in the oughties about why parents sent their kids to high school, "good education" was rated at the bottom of the top ten reasons, while "socializing" and babysitting (in so many words) were at the top three.

Poor learning doesn't at all indicate poor teaching. Education professionals are the scholars of their communities, and the public should treat them and pay them accordingly. The public mostly has its own priorities for schools mixed up, and wants quality for less than babysitting wages.
If you've ever heard the saying, "you get what you pay for," you'd fault the public for getting what it wants to pay for.

In the media world there's been a three-generation corporate propaganda attack on the nation's public schools. I could tell you all about that, but will refrain.
