It prevents Republicans from passing unpopular legislation, like nationwide abortion bans, things that while wildly popular among their base would result in severe pushback from the general public. Most of the things that the republican elite want isn't subject to the filibuster anyway: Tax cuts, budget issues, judicial appointments. This allows them to keep campaigning on the 'culture war' issues, without ever having to deliver, or suffer blowback for the unpopular nature of these stances.
In the long run, I think that eliminating the filibuster is a win/win move for Democrats, and lose/lose for the current christofacist embodiment of the republican party.
