(113,131 posts)Moving to NC when I was a kid was my first experience of coming into contact with a completely alien culture.
Outside the south, kids were just kids. Catholic, Protestant, and Jewish kids went different places in uncomfortable clothes accompanied by parents whose "stpp squirming!" could have been the appropriate responses to the service in progress, they were issued so often, but it was all the same to us, the true religious universal.
Not so the Southern Baptist kids I met down south. It was a near theocracy at that time, the SB preachers coming around once a week to every public school class for an hour of SB bible study, heavy on Leviticus, the kids sending me to hell multiple times a day no matter the context. It got old really fast.
I thought they had to be the worst of the worst until I fled up to Boston to be reacquainted with the True Believer Catholics, a slightly more familiar but no less bilious flavor of religious bigotry.
So I'm not impressed by strutting roosters calling themselves "post liberal." That breed has been around forever. Sensible people ignore them until the cops find their computers loaded with highly questionable files.
