Where I live, I would never try to embarrass an acquaintance. But Im sure it felt good to do that.
I think that would be a totally exhausting way to live, deciding to embarrass people in front of friends over politics.
But your situation is obviously different.

I think that if more people were "exposed" that most of them wouldn't be so PROUD of their beliefs.
