Our route took us right past the steel mill.
Maybe if you lived farther away from there, it was not noticeable.
Erie had a similar problem on the east side of the city from a large paper mill. I lived on the west side so we did not usually get the odor since the wind patterns were generally west to east. But on the rare occasions that winds shifted east to west, the odor would have offended flies on a garbage truck.
