She got pregnant after a year and a half of fertility treatments, miscarried at 18 weeks: cervix fully dilated, amniotic fluid gone, absolutely no survival chance for the fetus but it supposedly had a heartbeat — and docs said they could not legally surgically remove the remains until she was closer to death herself. She got sepsis and yes, almost died. Now she can’t have children at all. Now she is an activist against these deadly laws.

The color line is real, though. Among women who die of pregnancy-related complications in some red states, white women die at 3X the national average — and Black women die at 6X the national average.
