(2,168 posts)I couldn't watch the news for 8 years. But I knew those 8 years would be over some day.
With Trump it was different. I was obsessed. My husband and I were sure he wouldn't last one year. We watched the news constantly, sure each day would bring his downfall. We didn't think the country could survive 4 years. But forever was not on the table then.
We never understood how our daughter could be uninterested in politics, growing up with us, but the OP may have explained it. From the age of 12, Trump has defined politics for her. She can't remember a healthy debate. This battle against evil is all she has known. At age 2 she told a babysitter "I hate George Bush." Clearly she listened to us then, but inspiration was wanting.
I was raised in the 60s, and we were going to end prejudice and wage world peace. The world was going to change because of us. We marched about it. We sang about it. We didn't imagine we could fail. We didn't understand that it wasn't evolution or enlightenment, but a circle that comes back around, that human nature doesn't change and even a Hitler could rise again.
