(34,841 posts)we may still be dealing with the loss of manufacturing in those states. In Wisconsin I remember it vividly in the 1980s - that's when outsourcing really took off (Reagan was president), and then NAFTA soon thereafter. Some folks moved closer to the cities, but in Wisconsin there were still folks who stayed in the small towns/rural areas. They would travel a little further to get to factories still open, and some figured out how to make the leap to tourism. Many are churchgoers in those small towns, and republicans reeled them in using that.
Shapiro has done a great job, from what I've seen as an outsider, trying to work in a bipartisan way - which hopefully will help democrats. We'll see how it breaks out this time, but if I were involved in the ground there, I'd spend my money on turnout of likely dems in the city. The rural areas are going to take time (much like Texas).
