and I believe they're doing the right thing.
In terms of its effectiveness, I frankly think the whole practice of "reclaiming", or "owning" an insult as a way to 'defuse' it is exaggerated. It's worked in one or two instances, but is not, imo, a reliable strategy.
I'd guess that part of its appeal, lies in its being easy..It takes far less work than actually constructing an actual ARGUMENT against the use of demeaning terms. Instead of engaging in that kind of sometimes rigorous effort, one just opts to take an insult and "wear it"..I believe it fails more often than it succeeds.

I live in Scotland. I have never heard anyone in the UK use it aimed at a woman. I have heard Americans do that. n/t
