(75,779 posts)your opinion. You make a strong case for your position, which is exactly what I like the most on DU. So thank you for this. And I intend my responses here in a respectful manner, in the spirit of an interesting, important conversation.
Now, I am very old. So old, that I likely have said that a dozen times but can't remember. Two branches of the extended family are black, and came from NYC. Rap music started there -- and likely other places -- in the early 1970s. From NYC, it caught on. Even back then adults from these communities warned the younger generation. And hip-hop caught on in the 2000s, and older people warned the youth. That's not a new or limted thing. Elvis and the Beatles upset the older generation, and they warned us.
Of no importance, perhaps, my family came from the Old Sod. They were not greeted with open arms by the WASPs. In my youth, some of the old hatred lingered and found expression. I'm not comparing it, for even if there are similarities, there are obvious significant differences. I am concerned about the levels of hatred -- sexism and racism in particular -- that is rising again in this country. I think this cycle started when Senator Obama was running for president. So I do pay attention to the things you have said here.
