(11,811 posts)I hadn't been at this job for too long, and it hadn't had union certification all that long, either. We were in contract talks...blah blah blah. It seemed to the members (of which there were only 9 in our whole bargaining unit) that I knew what I was talking about, so they voted as I suggested....both to strike, and to end the strike. Seemed like a no-brainer to me. We'd proved our point and would strike if necessary, and the first year of a 3-year contract more than paid for the strike.
Anyway.
After the dust settled, I was talking with one of the management team with whom I got along famously, and it came to light that their bargaining team didn't know some very basic things about labour law in BC. Unbelievable.
It was a great job, in a very weird point in history. With the seniority raises (5% every 6 months until you qualified to take the national tech. certification exam and were then at 100% of top rate) and the contract raises that created the various tiers of wages, I made almost exactly triple my starting wage after 5 years and passing the cert. exam. You don't find deals like that any more.
