(44,924 posts)At present, just under 147 million votes have been counted -- 70.26 million for Harris, 74.17 million for Trump, 2.46 million 3rd party. California's official website indicates there are still nearly 5 million votes still to be processed in that state alone. And AP/NBC estimate around another 5-6 million still to be counted in the rest of the country. Even if NBC's estimate is off by a factor of two, it means that when all is said and done, the total number of votes cast will be at least 155 million and could be even closer to the 158 million cast in 2020.
Is that enough of an "explanation" for the folks claiming that somehow the total number of votes cast is an indicator that the election was "rigged"? In 2012, there were around 2 million fewer votes cast than in 2008. The 20 million plus increase in the number of votes cast in 2020 was unprecedented. For example, from 2012 to 2016, even though 2012 was a "down" year compared to 2008, the total number of votes increased only by around 6.6 million votes. The number of votes cast in 2024 already is 10 million more than that total and is certain to be the second highest in history.
