Archduke Ferdinand of the Austro-Hungarian Empire had a plan to promote the Serbian people to the same status as Austrians and Hungarians in the Dual Monarchy creating an unwieldy Triple Monarchy. This was "progressive" thinking. The Archduke thought this would placate the restive Serbian minority in their Empire. This idea infuriated the Serbian "Black Hand" who wanted complete independence and felt the plan would weaken their movement. Hence that fateful day in Sarajevo, B-H (June 1914) and all over Europe were heard the Guns of August.

Like Czar Alexander who had good intentions for his subjects, so did the Archduke.
